1961 Milgauss Lightning Bolt: Be Above The Trend

We at Hodinkee use the word "trend" quite a bit in our writing, and that is because watch buying and collecting is really a part of the fashion world. Sure, there is quite a bit more engineering involved, more history, and less TV-shows on Bravo about us, but trend plays a huge part in the pricing (and thus availability) of many high-end watches.

One of the trendiest, or most sought after watches right now is the Rolex Milgauss with green glass and lightning bolt second hand.  We have seen close to 100% mark-ups on this item, and stores selling out in minutes.  That is all well and good, but it is important to realize that every trend begins somewhere.  In this case, it begins in early 1950s when Rolex released a watch designed for those who worked around strong magnetic fields.  It was called the Milgauss and it was a commercial failure, to put it lightly. In fact, it was the slowest selling Rolex for almost 20 years, before they pulled the plug on it.

Then, when people started to realize "Hey, there aren't that many of these things out there," collectors started snatching them up as quickly as they could.  This led Rolex to re-introduce the Milgauss in its current lineup, and that is where we are today.

However, we have managed to find an early, original Milgauss WITH THE LIGHTNING BOLT SECOND HAND.  We are screaming that last part because this is a watch that is beyond rare.  We have seen other vintage Milgauss, but never one with this collectible second hand.

This 1961 Rolex SS Milgauss Ref 6541 has a black waffle dial, the original dauphne hands, as well as the lightning bolt second hand.  It features a caliber 1080 movement with 25 jewels, and a non-original, but still vintage Rolex SS Oyster bracelet.  This is a really great watch.  One that we ourselves would consider buying.  It is the perfect watch for someone who wants to follow the trend of owning a Milgauss, but wants to be just a little different.  We think this watch is so much cooler than today's version.  But then again, we're a little bias.
